Getting a Job

Although most freshmen donít need assistance from the Career Center, help will be there for them when theyíre ready. The Career Center brought more than 150 companies last year to campus to recruit and scheduled more than 1,600 interviews. The center also organizes career fairs and provides other job-search services, including

  • A library of current directories listing thousands of internships and summer jobs worldwide
  • Resume-writing and interviewing assistance
  • Opportunities for part-time jobs, internships and full-time jobs

Croft Institute for International Studies

The Croft Institute for International Studies helps students prepare for leadership positions in the Foreign Service, international relations, business, law, accountancy and other fields in our increasingly interdependent world. Study abroad is required, and the institute offers intensive language programs designed to ensure proficiency. In addition, Croft students land top internships. Recently students have completed internships at the U.S. Department of State, the Carter Center in Atlanta and the White House.

Lott Leadership Institute

Itís not an exaggeration to say that The University of Mississippi has been a leader in producing leaders at the state and national levels, including numerous governors, Supreme Court justices and U.S. senators and representatives. Playing to this strength, the university established in 2000 an official center for nurturing the next generations of leaders. The Lott Leadership Institute was launched with more than $13 million in private gifts. In 2004, Ole Miss received approval to offer the stateís first bachelorís degree program in public-policy leadership.

Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College

Readerís Digest includes the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College among the nationís three finest honors colleges. Established through a gift from philanthropists Jim and Sally Barksdale, the Honors College offers a private-school atmosphere at public-school prices. Students enjoy smaller classes and seminars taught by master professors, and they do individual research projects in their majors. The Freshman Ventures program has packed teams of students off to explore the United States from Maine to Arizona and many points in between. About 140 freshmen enter the college each year. On average, honors students score 30 on the ACT and 1350 (critical reading and math only) on the SAT.

Phi Beta Kappa

Because they both chose majors in the College of Liberal Arts, John and Nicole will eventually be eligible to be considered for induction into Phi Beta Kappa, the most prestigious liberal arts organization for undergraduates. UM secured a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa in fall 2000, and its selection by this renowned organization says more about the quality of Ole Missí programs, faculty and facilities than we ever could. Ole Miss is the only public university in Mississippi to shelter a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.

Intelligence Report

The University of Mississippi enrolled more National Merit Scholars for the 2005-06 year than all other Mississippi public institutions of higher learning combined, according to data from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which administers the awards.

UM enrolled 37 National Merit Scholars compared with 35 at all other public universities in the state. Since 1955, the National Merit Scholarship Program has awarded scholarships to high school seniors based on academic achievement, standardized test scores, and extracurricular and leadership activities.

UM tied the University of Virginia in attracting these outstanding students, and compared favorably with the Furman University (22) and Auburn University (29).
