The University of Mississippi campus is a busy yet comfortable environment for both campus residents and commuter students. Residence halls provide convenient housing and instant communities to plug into. Speakers ranging from Spike Lee to Senator John McCain, concerts from classical to rock, and nearly 200 student organizations provide plenty of intellectual stimulation, entertainment and opportunities to get involved.

Residence Halls

Freshmen at Ole Miss (except married students and commuters who live with their parents) are required to live the equivalent of one academic year in a residence hall on campus. The university has spent millions of dollars in recent years on top-to-bottom renovations of many halls to make living on campus a more enjoyable experience. Your residence hall may have a sun deck, weight room, kitchen, convenience store, computer lab, lounge and/or study room.

Campus Dining

Made-to-order stir fry, freshly prepared pasta, salad by the pound and sushi are just a few of the things you’ll find in UM’s food venues. The food court in the Student Union and the all-you-can-eat Johnson Commons Residential Restaurant are the two most popular places to “refuel,” but something’s open on campus from 7 a.m. ‘til 11 p.m.

Campus Speakers

Ole Miss may be a little off the beaten path, but you’d never know it from the nationally acclaimed speakers, entertainers and international conferences that find their way here every year.

The Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference and the Oxford Conference for the Book capitalize on Oxford’s status as former home to Nobel Prize-winner William Faulkner and best-selling author John Grisham, as well as the town’s reputation as a mecca for artists and writers.

Recent speakers on campus include

  • Filmmaker Spike Lee
  • King Abdullah II of Jordan
  • Satanic Verses author Salman Rushdie
  • U.S. Secretary of the Treasury John W. Snow (now the former secretary)
  • U.S. Senator John McCain
  • WorldCom whistle-blower Cynthia Cooper
  • Holocaust survivor Marion Blumenthal Lazan
  • Journalist Judy Woodruff
