Rowan Oak

Chartered by the Mississippi Legislature in 1844, The University of Mississippi opened its doors to 80 students in 1848. Also known as Ole Miss, the university is one of the oldest public institutions of higher education in the South. It is a classical liberal arts institution that also offers a selection of more than 100 high-quality academic programs. Ranked among the nation’s top 50 public research universities by the Lombardi Program on Measuring University Performance, The University of Mississippi emphasizes strong classroom teaching supported by excellent library, laboratory and technical facilities.

Location

The University of Mississippi’s main campus is located in the picturesque city of Oxford in rolling hills of north Mississippi. Oxford combines the charm and safety of a small town (pop. 12,000) with the sophistication of a larger city. Conveniently located 75 miles from Memphis, Tennessee, (metro population: 1 million) big-city amenities are close at hand.

The historic, wooded Ole Miss campus in Oxford encompasses nearly 1,000 acres and includes 220 major buildings. The Lyceum, which opened in 1848, is the institutional landmark and is the inspiration for the university’s logo.

Enrollment

Total enrollment for 2006-07 on The University of Mississippi’s three campuses (Oxford, Southaven, Tupelo) and at The University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson is almost 17,000. On the Oxford campus, 67 percent of undergraduates are from Mississippi, and minority enrollment is 19 percent. African-American enrollment is 14 percent, and 2.9 percent of students come from 67 foreign countries.

Student Organizations

Ole Miss has 200 student organizations. These groups include student government, academic honoraries, professional organizations, special-interest groups, service organizations, cultural activities and performing arts groups, and communications/media organizations.

Phi Beta Kappa

The University of Mississippi is the first public university in Mississippi to shelter a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious undergraduate honor society.

Technology

Students are able to apply for admission, register for classes, check grades, pay bills and submit class assignments online. Each residence hall room is connected to the university’s computer network, and many public areas on campus provide wireless connections.

Library

The J.D. Williams Library houses more than 1.2 million volumes, as well as monographs, microfilms, audiovisual materials, government publications and more than 7,800 current periodical titles. Of note are the library’s Hall of Mississippi Writers; William Faulkner Room; world-renowned Blues Archive; and the national library of the accountancy profession, which includes a book printed in 1494 on a Gutenberg press.

Student Housing

Ole Miss has 12 traditional residence halls and two apartment complexes that house a total of 3,400 students. Additional student housing is provided by the various sorority and fraternity organizations under the dean of students’ Office of Greek Life.

Fitness and Recreation

More than 1,000 people use the Turner Center fitness facilities each day, and more than 7,000 students annually participate in traditional intramural sports such as softball, basketball and tennis, as well as wallyball, ultimate Frisbee and other sports.

Southeastern Conference Athletics

The university’s 18 sports teams compete at the NCAA’s highest level, and 15 have participated in post-season play since 1995. At the same time, 736 Ole Miss student-athletes were named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll.

Rowan Oak

Rowan Oak, the home of noted author William Faulkner, is part of the Ole Miss campus. This Primitive Greek Revival house, which Faulkner bought in 1930 and refurbished as his sanctuary from the world, is open to the public and still evokes the legend and persona of the great American author and most famous resident of Oxford.
