Putting the fun in fundraiser, Relay for Life gives students the chance to stay up all night for a worthy cause.
The American Cancer Society-sponsored event took place April 18, 6 p.m.-6 a.m., during which 280 participants, in teams of 10-15 each, raised $50,000. This is the seventh year in which Ole Miss has helped out. Usually, the event is held outdoors in the Lyceum Circle. This year, due to rain, it took place in the Turner Center, but that didn’t dampen the fun.
“Once you participate, you will be hooked,” says Sheila Horne, community representative for the American Cancer Society.
With food and entertainment to keep them going, team members take turns walking all night in honor or in memory of their loved ones who have been affected by cancer. Their way is lit by candles placed around the track.
“We have a special luminaria ceremony where we remember those lost to cancer and honor those still fighting the battle,” Horne says. “The luminaries are a beautiful sight and the highlight of the evening.”
