Dr. Donald Dyer, Co-Director of the Chinese Language Flagship Program

Dr. Dyer is Professor of Modern Languages and Chair of the Department of Modern Languages, sharing the administrative direction of the Chinese Language Flagship Program with Dr. Henrietta Yang.

Dr. Henrietta Yang, Croft Associate Professor of Chinese

Co-Director of the Chinese Language Flagship Program

Dr. Yang holds a B.A. in Linguistics from California State University at Fullerton and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin. She joined the University of Mississippi in 2013. Before coming to the University of Mississippi, Yang was Associate Professor of Chinese Studies and a program director at Morehouse College (2008-2013). She served as a teaching team leader for an Intensive Foreign Area Officer Program (FOA) at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, where she was an instructional technology specialist and Certified Government Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) tester (2005-2008). Her research interests include Chinese language pedagogy, Chinese linguistics, the interface between instructional technology and language teaching, and formal syntactic theory.

Mr. Nethaneel (Nate) Flake, Coordinator

As the UM Chinese Flagship Program Coordinator, Nate is the first point of contact for students and prospective students alike. He is available to field questions about the program and respond to any Flagship-related technical issues that arise for students regarding their classes, international flights, or scholarship funds, and prospective students regarding their applications.

Dr. Yi Lin, Assistant Professor of Chinese

Dr. Lin specializes in second language acquisition and language assessment. She received her B.A. in English literature from Shandong University, her M.S. in International Education and Linguistics from Indiana University, and her Ph.D. in Foreign Language Education from the University of Iowa. Dr. Lin joined the Flagship in 2003 and is a respected leader at the forefront of Chinese language acquisition. She has authored a Chinese textbook entitled Chinese in Motion: an Advanced Immersion Course, and her research interests include the relationship between vocabulary acquisition and language acquisition, validity and reliability of classroom assessment, and objective Chinese language testing and evaluation.

Dr. Mei Yang, Assistant Professor of Chinese

Dr. Yang’s areas of research include Chinese literature and cinema. She received her Ph.D. at the University of Oregon. Dr. Yang joined the UM Chinese Flagship program in 2012.

Ms. Ying Feng, Instructor of Chinese

Ms. Ying Feng serves as an instructor for intermediate and advanced levels of Chinese, on the Oxford campus. She received her M.A. in Ancient Chinese Literature from the University of Jinan. She is pursuing a second M.A. Degree in Chinese with a focus on Teaching Chinese as Second Language from Middlebury College. Before she joined the flagship program, Ms. Feng taught Chinese for Middlebury - Beijing, as well as in the Associated Colleges in China program (ACC - Beijing). She has aslo taught in the CET winter program and CLS (Critical language scholarship program) in Beijing.

Ms. Haiyun Zhang, Visiting Instructor of Chinese

Ms. Zhang serves as an instructor for students in the Chinese Language Flagship Program. She is a visiting instructor from Qingdao University in Qingdao, China, where she teaches Chinese to both undergraduate and graduate students. She has also been a teacher of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language for more than 10 years. She received an M.A. in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language from Beijing Language and Culture University. She has taught for the Princeton in Beijing summer program and has served as an exchange professor at Kookmin University in South Korea.

Ms. Hui Zhu, Instructor of Chinese

Ms. Zhu serves as an instructor for students in the Chinese Language Flagship Program. She received her M.A. from East China Normal University.

Ms. Hui Chen, Teaching Assistant in Chinese

Ms. Chen is a teaching assistant for students in the Chinese Language Flagship Program. She is pursuing a Master's of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language at Minzu University in Beijing.

Dr. Michael Metcalf, Director Emeritus of the Chinese Language Flagship Program

Dr. Metcalf, former Professor of History and Associate Provost for International Affairs, served as co-director of the Chinese Language Flagship Program since its founding in 2003. He was instrumental in the establishment and development of the program during its first decade of existence.
