In addition to providing a rigorous academic curriculum that challenges students inside the classroom, the Chinese Language Flagship Program and The University of Mississippi regularly offer students opportunities to practice Chinese and to deepen their understanding of Chinese culture. Examples of these special events include:
Leading up to the first 2008 presidential debate between John McCain and Barack Obama, which was held at the University, the Flagship Program hosted a Chinese-language political debate. In addition to leading the spirited debate over the two candidates, Flagship students served as translators for students, teachers, and members of the local community who did not speak Chinese.
Students and faculty in the Flagship Program celebrate holidays such as the Chinese New Year and the Mid-Autumn Festival. During these times, students prepare skits and songs to actively participate in holiday festivities with the local Chinese community.
During these competitions on campus, students are afforded the chance to showcase their Chinese speaking ability.
Past speakers include representatives from the Chinese Consulate General in Houston and Chinese professors from universities across the United States. Students are also encouraged to attend China-related lectures hosted by the Croft Institute for International Studies and the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College.
Chinese language students at the University of Mississippi recently founded the Ole Miss Chinese Club. This organization hosts activities where students can meet outside of the classroom to practice Chinese.
The University of Mississippi provides many opportunities for Flagship students to interact with students from Chinese-speaking countries. For example, the Global Ambassadors program connects students from the United States and across the world to spend time each week building friendships across language and culture.
