SUMMER UNDERGRADUATE INTERNSHIP IN NATURAL PRODUCTS NEUROSCIENCE

The goal of the Summer Undergraduate Internship Program is to promote and enhance the training environment of the center.  The program provides students with the opportunity to participate in the ongoing research of faculty within the CORE-NPN.  A variety of experiences in medicinal chemistry, pharmacognosy, pharmacology, pharmaceutics and psychology will be available.

Program Dates:  The program runs for eight weeks beginning in June.  The 2009 program begins June 8, 2009 – July 31, 2009.

Eligibility:  Undergraduates with a minimum GPA of 3.0 who are currently enrolled at any accredited college or university and have completed their sophomore year by the beginning of the summer are encouraged to apply.

Stipend:  Interns will receive a stipend of $3,000.

Housing & Living Expenses:  No housing or living expenses are provided.  Students must secure their own housing.   There are several apartment complexes that are close to the campus and most offer a shuttle to and from campus.  For a listing of housing resources, please click here http://www.apt-finder.com/oxford_ms_properties_1.htm.

Selection Process:  Students are selected through a competitive application process to participate in an eight week research-intensive program.  Students are matched with research projects that best fit their interests as indicated on their application forms.  More information regarding our current research projects can be found at http://www.olemiss.edu/cobre/overviewresearch.html.  Each student is assigned to a CORE-NPN faculty member who will serve as their mentor throughout the program.

Program Requirements:

  • Students will be expected to devote at least 40 hours per week in research-related activities, with the majority of your time performing laboratory research.
  • Students will be required to attend training sessions and education enrichment activities that cover topics such as laboratory basics, career paths in science, and hot topics in research.
  • At the close of the program in July, all interns must participate in a one-day symposium where they will present an oral report of their research project.
  • Interns are also required to submit a written report on their research project at the conclusion of the program.

Application ProcessThe application deadline is March 2, 2009.  In addition to the application form, you will need to include a resume, and a one page typed description of your career goals.  Arrange to have two letters of recommendation and an official copy of your undergraduate transcript(s) sent directly to the center.
