Overview of Core

 The major aims of the Chemical Core of the Center of Research Excellence in Natural Products Neuroscience is to isolate the active principles of the selected plants, fungi, and marine organisms with CNS activity, to elucidate their structures and provide material for in vitro and in vivo pharmacological studies in order to create the preliminary data for RO1 applications by junior faculty. The chemical core will also have an advisory role for individual projects that require expertise in isolation and structure elucidation of secondary metabolites from selected organisms. The specific aims for the chemical core include:

• isolation of active secondary metabolites from organisms with CNS activities, structure elucidation of isolated active principles
• re-isolation or synthesis of larger quantities of active components for in vitro and in vivo studies.
• semi-synthetic modification of lead compounds to generate SAR data and to develop drug candidates.
• RO1 submissions
