Outreach
"Calm in Chaos" is designed to teach tools that help make the most chaotic day calmer. Using the model of 1) Hear it, 2) Do it, 3) Talk about it, the group lasts 6 weeks (one hour per week) and explores a variety of ways to make peace in our lives. This is a group for beginners. No experience is needed. The specific techniques practiced in class include:
Week 1: Rhythmic Breathing
Week 2: Progressive Muscle Relaxation
Week 3: Guided Imagery
Week 4: Guided Meditation
Week 5: Mindfulness
Week 6: Focused Meditation
Calm in Chaos is offered on various days and times each semester. If you are interested in this course, please watch for mass e-mails sent to students, faculty and staff announcing specific dates and times. For questions or group times, call (662)915-3784.
“Let’s Talk” is a program that provides easy access to informal consultations with counselors from the Counseling Center. The hope is that stigma, cultural differences, and other barriers to help-seeking will be mitigated by the unique characteristics of “Let's Talk:” walk-in availability; an informal, friendly format with a focus on immediate problem-solving; no appointments; direct referrals from trusted members of the student's community; the option for an anonymous visit; and meeting outside of the Counseling Center, often within the student's community.
Consultants hold walk-in hours at the following sites around campus:
- Monday -- Student Union, Dean of Students' Conference Room, 11:00-2:00
- Tuesday -- Luckyday Residential College, Conference Room, 12:00-3:00
- Wednesday -- Student Health Services, 2nd Floor #226, 12:00-3:00
- Thursday -- Office of International Programs, 331 Martindale, 12:00-3:00
- Thursday -- Law School, Room 3001-A, Bonus Room 1
- Friday -- The Ridge, Room 320
For more information, contact Joshua Magruder at jamagrud@olemiss.edu, at 915-3788 or visit the Let's Talk website at www.olemiss.edu/letstalk
The University Counseling Center Outreach Programming also offers other outreach programs to Ole Miss students, faculty/staff and the Oxford community. Programs are offered on a variety of health and wellness topics.
