Summary:
Primarily covers sections in text in first item listed below which includes computational solutions using SAP2000 and MASTAN2 software. The advanced topics will be covered as time permits, with at least some exposure to plate elements and their use in SAP2000..

I. Direct Stiffness Analysis of Linear Systems: 1D Structural Elements
  • Structural Elements and Systems: DOF, Coordinate Systems and Transformations (1.1-1.2, 2.1-2.5,5.1)
  • Analysis of Rods and Trusses: Element Stiffness Equations, Global System Equations, Direct Stiffness Procedure (Ch. 3.1-3.4)
  • Analysis of Continuous Beams (Ch. 4.1-4.6)
  • Analysis of Frames (Ch. 5.1-5.3)
  • Virtual Work Principles: Shape Functions, Nonuniform Sections (Chs. 6.1-6.5, 7.1-7.6)

II. Advanced Topics: 2D Structural and Continuum Elements
  • Plane Stress and Plate Finite Elements: DOF, Coordinate Systems, Strain-Nodal Displacement Matrix, Constitutive Coefficient Matrix, Stiffness Matrix, End Force Vector, System Equations: Global Stiffness Matrix and Force Vector (Class Notes)
  • Analysis of Wall and Floor Structures under In-plane and Out-of-Plane Loading ( Class Notes)

Grading Summary :
Two midterm exams will cover Chs. 1-4 ( Rods, Trusses, and Continuous Beams) and Chs. 5-7 (Frames, Virtual Work), respectively.
The final exam will cover all material presented during the course with emphasis on advanced topics (Walls, Floor Systems).
Emphasis is placed on six main homework assignments which include both analytical formulations and computational modeling with MATLAB, SAP2000, and MASTAN2 software.
Grader(Exams and Homeworks): The instructor
Weights: Midterm Exams I, II- 40 % ( 20 % each)  Final Exam- 25 %  Homeworks-.35 %

Computers Access and Programs:
Student should have both email and web access to view the course assignments and download files.
Software is available on the PC's in the Civil Engineering Computer Graphics Lab, Rm. 213 Carrier Hall, for programming assignments.
Text files containing MATLAB programs and SAP2000 and MASTAN2 input or output files presented in class will be posted on the course web site.
