Instructor:  Dr. Susan Ditto - Office:  318 Bishop Hall

Phone: 915-6945 or 915-7148 - E-mail: scditto@olemiss.edu

Website: http://www.olemiss.edu/courses/gst201

Office Hours: Mondays and Wednesdays 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. and other times by appointment or happenstance.  You may also e-mail me anytime or put notes and/or assignments in the drop box on my office door.

 REQUIRED readings:

  • Gender on Campus: Issues for College Women by Sharon Gmelch
  • The Less Noble Sex: Scientific, Religious, and Philosophical Conceptions of Woman’s Nature by Nancy Tuana
  • Women and the National Experience, 2ed., by Ellen Skinner

Students in this class are expected to read and be prepared to discuss selections from each of the above books (see course schedule below) every week. Books should be available at all three major textbook stores in Oxford as well as through online booksellers like squarebooks.com, bn.com, amazon.com, and other online retailers.  I will also place one copy of each book behind the reserve desk in the UM library.

TESTS:

Tests will be approximately 2/3 objective (multiple choice, matching, etc.) and 1/3 essay or discussion questions.  Questions will be drawn from the required reading and class lectures since the previous test.  Tests will account for 60 percent of your final grade.

Test #1, Tues. Sept. 28

Test #2, Tues. Nov. 2

Test #3, (Final Exam) Thurs. Dec. 9, 8:00 a.m.

RESEARCH PROJECT AND IN-CLASS PRESENTATION:

Each student will complete a project on the Gender-related topic of his/her choice and will present the results of his/her work to the class in a brief (10-15 minute) presentation.  Projects may consist of standing exhibits, PowerPoint presentations, photo albums, film studies, original films, slides, or other media, interviews, surveys, original works of art (such as painting, sculpture, poetry, fiction, or interpretative dance), dramatic reenactments, or a traditional research paper.  Group projects are acceptable in some cases.  All projects (except for research papers) must be accompanied by a 3-5 page written summary including:  what you did, how you did it, and what the project teaches us about gender.  See in-class handout and the “Assignments” area of the course site for more details.

Student presentations will be spaced throughout the semester.  Presentation dates will be assigned on a first come, first served basis.  Students MUST sign up for a topic and presentation date no later than Thursday, Sept. 2.  You may do so in class, during office hours, by phone, or by E-mail.

The project and presentation together will account for 20 percent of your final grade.

COURSE POLICIES:

  • Absences
Class attendance is required.  Roll will be taken at the beginning of each class.  Excuses for missed classes are neither required nor desired.

Class participation (including attendance in class and at optional events as well as in-class discussion) will account for 20 percent of your final grade.

  • Make-up Tests
Excuses for missed tests are neither required nor desired

Students may make up ONE test during the semester, no questions asked.  Students who miss a test must see Dr. Ditto as soon as possible to schedule a date and time to take the makeup.  Make-up tests will consist entirely of essay and/or discussion questions.

Students who fail to make up a missed test will receive a grade of zero (0) on that test.

Students will be allowed to make up a second missed test only in extreme circumstances OR for students who must reschedule due to participation in an official University-sanctioned activity.

  • Academic Honesty
Students are expected to adhere to the highest possible standards of academic and personal integrity.  Cheating on tests, plagiarism (representing someone else’s work as your own), allowing someone else to represent your work as his/her own, and other examples of dishonesty will not be tolerated.  Students suspected of academic dishonesty will face disciplinary action ranging from a grade of zero on the assignment to expulsion from the university.

For more information on plagiarism and academic honesty issues, see the your University “M Book.”
