Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. . .

Required Texts:

Liberty, Equality, PowerMurrin, et. al.  Liberty, Equality, Power: A History of the American People (Volume I, to 1877).

Other than the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights, which can be found in the Appendices of this book, Dr. Ditto will not assign specific readings from this text.  Instead, students should use it to supplement their notes and to gain further understanding of lecture material.

Speaking of AmericaLaura A. Belmonte, Speaking of America:  Readings in U.S. History (Volume I:  To 1877)

This book is a collection of primary sources such as diary entries, newspaper articles, and other first-person accounts.  Students will read approximately 10 pages per week on topics that correspond to that week's lectures.  See the "Assignments" page of this website for exact reading assignments.

Each test will include a brief essay question or two that asks students to compare the points of view of different sources or otherwise evaluate several weeks' worth of readings as they relate to the subject matter of the course since the previous test.  See your syllabus for test dates and topics.

A Year in the South: 1865
Stephen V. Ash, A Year in the South: 1865

This book examines the lives of four individuals -- a slave, a soldier, a war widow, and a slaveholder/preacher -- and how they changed as a result of the U.S. Civil War.

Students will be responsible for reading this book at their own pace over the course of the semester.

On Friday November 19, students will hand in a formal paper in response to one of two paper topics (to be handed out in class as posted HERE in mid-October).  See the "Assignments" area of this site for more information.

Other readings:
From time to time, Dr. Ditto will hand out (or make available here) additional required readings that are not available in any of the texts.   You may either read them online or print them out.
