Course Description

This course is a study of the forms which are prevalent in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century music. Emphasis is placed on the relationship between harmonic structure and formal design. We begin with a study of important structural elements which assist in analyzing a variety of forms from both an aural and visual perspective. Each form is then introduced and studied in relationship to the structural elements. These forms include binary, ternary, rondo, theme and variation, fugue, and sonata-allegro. Musical examples are taken from the Baroque era through the twentieth century. Activities include readings, analysis, listening, written assignments, exercises for aural training, and a final project. Two tests and a final exam will be given.

Required Textbook
Spencer and Temko: A Practical Approach to the Study of Form in Music
Attendance Policy

Because class participation is so important in this course, students are expected to attend all sessions. More than two absences, other than for official school business or a family emergency, will result in a lower final grade. The teacher reserves the right to drop a student from the course who has missed five or more classes.
Homework

Homework assignments are given regularly. They must be completed, neatly written, and handed in on time. Late assignments will not be accepted for grading, unless prior arrangements have been made with the teacher. However, informal evaluations will be gladly given. If you are absent, you may turn in assignments and pick up handouts from class in the folder on my office door.
