This course is a study of the forms which are prevalent in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century music. Emphasis is placed on the relationship between harmonic structure and formal design. We begin with a study of important structural elements which assist in analyzing a variety of forms from both an aural and visual perspective. Each form is then introduced and studied in relationship to the structural elements. These forms include binary, ternary, rondo, theme and variation, fugue, and sonata-allegro. Musical examples are taken from the Baroque era through the twentieth century. Activities include readings, analysis, listening, written assignments, exercises for aural training, and a final project. Two tests and a final exam will be given.
