Resources for Developing Online Courses

Creating Course Web Pages

The system, cedar.olemiss.edu, functions as one of the campus' Web servers. You may develop course materials in your personal account on sunset, however it is preferred that you place your course web pages within the main UM hierarchy on cedar. There are several advantages to setting up your course on cedar, most significant is that your materials will be indexed by the UM Web search engine and that you will have more disk space.

To have a course directory set up for your class, you will need a account on cedar. To get an account you will need to go to the Helpdesk in Weir Hall with your University ID. Once your cedar account is active you will need to fill out the Request for Course Web page Link form.

Many UM instructors already have course Web Pages on various departmental servers. To have an existing course linked from the UM Web courses page, fill out the Request for Course Web page Link form.

Blackboard Blackboard is a web-based instruction package licensed by UM, and supported by IT, as the standard campus e-learning platform. Faculty and instructors can use it to easily make available course materials, documents, chat environments, discussion boards and quizzes online.

In order to get started with Blackboard you will need an active WebID account. This allows you to work with your own course area, or within someone else's. If you are encountering problems with your WebID account, please contact the Helpdesk (Weir Hall).

In order to post materials using Blackboard a course space must be created. To do this log into Online Services and access the "Class Rolls and Grades" interface which includes a new service that allows instructors to "Blackboard Enable" sections they are teaching. Once a section is enabled, it will be automatically created in Blackboard, and students who have added the section in Campus Management will be added in Blackboard through a nightly synchronization process. Similarly, if students drop a section in Campus Management, the corresponding enrollments will be automatically disabled in Blackboard. Additionally, all individuals who are listed as instructors in Campus Management will be automatically added as instructors in Blackboard.

If you have any additional questions please e-mail blackboard@olemiss.edu or contact the IT Helpdesk (x5222).
