Frequently Asked Questions

When can I make changes to my benefits?
When you have a qualifying event
During Open Enrollment (every October).

Exceptions:
state life insurance (which can be added at any time, BUT you will have to submit a medical statement and be approved)
group long-term disability
supplemental retirements (can be changed at any time)
dependent care reimbursement accounts (can be adjusted if cost of daycare increases/decreases, etc.)

What is a qualifying event?
Think of a qualifying event as a 'life change' -

Marriage or Divorce
Death of a spouse or dependent
Birth, adoption or foster placement of a child
Change in employment (for you or your spouse)
Loss of coverage from another insurance company including Medicare/Medicaid (this does not count if you cancel the policy)

How do I know what benefits I am signed up for?
Look at your paystub - know what you are paying for (and what the University is paying for)! The more informed you are, the easier it will be for you to take advantage of your benefits.
Call Human Resources if you don't understand a deduction or a premium amount

When will I receive my insurance cards?
4-6 weeks from the time you complete your paperwork.

Can I go to the doctor before I receive my insurance cards?
Yes. You must get the medical provider to re-submit claim once cards are received.

Should I go to Open Enrollment?
YES: if you have a change to make to your benefits
If you have questions or need more information before deciding about a change, you should come to the benefits fair (held in September) to get the most information, and time with the HR staff and benefit company agents.

Should I go to the Benefits Fair?
YES! This is a great time to learn about the benefits and see if you might want to make changes during open enrollment.
Vendors from the different companies will be available to answer in-depth questions - a rare opportunity!

When do my Open Enrollment changes take effect?
Your coverage will take effect January 1 of the next year.
You will see the difference in your paycheck in December because we pay premiums a month in advance.

What do I do if I have a problem with my benefits?
The best thing to do is email (hrorient@olemiss.edu) or call a benefits representative at 915-7431 and explain what you need.
He will determine if your question can be answered via phone or email or if you need to come in (and you may want to come in, which of course is fine).
Calling or emailing in advance and making an appointment saves you time because your paperwork and answers to your question can be waiting for you when you get to HR - instead of you waiting to see someone, and then waiting while your file is pulled, etc.
