The African American Studies interdisciplinary major consists of 42 semester hours, including 6 hours of basic core courses
(AAS 201 and 202), 33 hours from the three areas of specialization, and the 3 hour senior seminar course (AAS 480). At least 12 of the 33 hours must be in a designated area of specialization. In addition, 12 hours must be chosen from one or both of the other two areas outside of the designated area of specialization. These courses may include courses taken before declaration of major. Areas of specialization include: African and African American History, African and African American Political Institutions, and African and African American Culture. A minimum grade of "C" is required in all courses applied toward the African American Studies major. Although other requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree must be met, the African American Studies major does not require a minor.
