  Art History

Art history is offered as an emphasis area of study for only undergraduate students.

Overview
Art history is the study of art in its various forms throughout the history of humankind. Students examine works of art in their historical, social, and political contexts. They also study principal artist and movements, past and present, in Western and non-Western cultures, augmented at the advanced level by in-depth study of selected periods in the history of art.

Facilities

The department’s primary lecture halls for the teaching of art history courses are located on the first floor of Meek Hall in Meek Hall Auditorium and Meek Hall Room 120. These rooms feature new infrastructure for digital projection capabilities, in addition to traditional dual 35mm slide projection. Art History courses are also conducted in the Skipwith Teaching Museum, and the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College. Additional campus facilities providing a variety of pedagogical support for art history courses include the University Museum, J.D. Williams Library, the Faculty Technology Development Center, the Visual Resource Center, the print collection of the Southern Graphics Council, Gallery 130 in Meek Hall, and the department’s permanent collection of art.

The Visual Resource Center
is the main research facility for art history. This center houses an analog collection of over 88,000 art history slides used for research and education, maintained by the Visual Resource Center Curator. It also provides facilities for digitization of slides and images in addition to the assistance of obtaining educational visual resources. The Visual Resource Center provides the use of an online digital image database (UMDID.org) which houses over 28,000 digital images.

umdid.org

In 2004, The Department of Art's Visual Resource Center initiated the creation of a digital image database. By 2007, UMDID.org was launched online and now houses a collection of over 28,000 art history images. It is an invaluable tool for the department's researchers and professors.
