Ashley Chavis, originally from Savannah, Georgia, is a studio potter in Oxford, MS and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at The University of Memphis in Memphis, TN. He will also be teaching as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at The University of Mississippi in the summer of 2006.

He was awarded a $15,000 portfolio scholarship to attend the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah (SCAD), Georgia. After studying architecture there for one year, he transferred to Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) in Savannah where he was awarded a full scholarship as a Hope scholar. He graduated Cum Laude from AASU in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts in Art. At AASU, Ashley was published on the cover of Calliope Literary Magazine and received the Charles F. Jensen Memorial Ceramics/Sculpture Award. He also won 1st Prize at the Calliope Café Art Show. Ashley joined the staff at Savannah’s Cultural Affairs Department in 2001 and was later hired as their Ceramics Specialist where he maintained the city’s ceramics studio and taught ceramics courses until 2002. Ashley began graduate school at The University of Mississippi in 2002.

While pursuing an MFA, he served as the Department of Art’s Gallery Coordinator and President of the Mud Daubers (student ceramics organization). He was recognized by the University’s Student Art Association as Art Student of the Year in 2004. He was also selected to Cup: Intimate Object IV, 2005 in Fort Wayne, Indiana and Craft Forms 2004 in Wayne, Pennsylvania. He has recently exhibited works at Southside Gallery in Oxford, Mississippi and Studio 1688 in Memphis, Tennessee.

Ashley is currently teaching Two–Dimensional Design and Advanced Drawing as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Memphis. He is a member of the College Art Association, the Southeastern College Art Conference, and the National Conference on Education for the Ceramic Arts. He resides in Oxford, Mississippi with his wife, Virginia Rougon Chavis.
