Brooke White, originally from Hampstead, NH, received her BFA in 1999 from Alfred University, New York State College of Ceramics in Printmaking and Photography and her MFA from Cornell University in Video and Photography. Brooke joined the Ole Miss faculty in 2005.

My creative work investigates the ways in which we are being trained to
see today by mass media. I emphasize time and speed in our natural world by re-emphasizing it in my videos, slowing elements down and playing with perceptions. Subtle events occur throughout the pieces, which speak to mass media ideologies and techniques. I hope to return us to an innocence of seeing, during a time where we are addicted to distraction. My photographs serve as a tool, which allow me to investigate the role the landscape plays in defining who we are and who we become. I am interested in emphasizing the universality of the landscape and place by documenting landscapes that are very far apart geographically but very similar in appearance.

Brooke has received several artists’ grants, most recently she was the recipient of an Individual Artist Grant from the MS Commission for the Arts/ NEA. In 2004 she traveled around the world on an artist grant to continue the work she was pursuing in graduate school. Travel is a major part of my working process as an artist I try to understand how other cultures, specifically agrarian ones, relate to nature. My research has taken me to Africa, Europe, South East Asia and Latin America. Her work has been shown on both the international (Amsterdam, Kenya, Italy) and national (PA, NH, CO, NY, ME, MA, TN, MS) level in exhibitions and film festivals.
