Some of the Reasons to Choose Ole Miss
CURRICULUM
The Department of Art at the University of Mississippi is committed
to preparing undergraduate and graduate students to excel in creative
production, research, education, and service in the visual arts. Our
programs begin with a basis in the liberal arts, giving artists
a wider understanding of the world. Ole Miss has the most comprehensive
art program in the state, offering three baccalaureate degrees and a
graduate degree with several areas of concentration within the studio
degrees.
· Undergraduate
Programs
The B.A. in art is a broad degree focusing on studio art.
Students often choose to focus on computer design with a minor in
business, journalism, or computer science.
The B.A. in art history
offers a broad
choice of courses in Western and non-Western art history, as well
as unique courses in the arts, especially concerning Southern arts
and
architecture.
Artists seeking professional portfolios
will pursue the Bachelor of Fine
Arts degree, which allows for a concentration in ceramics,
painting, printmaking, graphic design/web design or sculpture. · Graduate
Programs
The Department of Art offers a graduate program leading
to
the Master
of Fine Arts in Studio Art. Applicants to this
program should have strong motivation to pursue their discipline
in depth and
the creative energy and imagination that can be recognized, supported,
and assisted by specialized faculty.
FACULTY DEDICATED TO TEACHING
The willingness of our faculty to work closely with students
is an attractive feature of our programs. Students are able to enjoy
small classes with professors teaching their specialties. The low faculty/student
ratio allows a great deal of interaction between the students and faculty.
In addition to teaching and mentoring students, our faculty engage in
creative production, research, and publication.
STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITIES
The Art Department has primary studio and lecture space in three
buildings. Our newest addition, Meek Hall, contains ceramics, printmaking,
sculpture, an art gallery, the Visual Resources Center, the woodworking
shop and the art department office. The sculpture foundry and ceramic
kilns have
been
constructed
adjacent
to Meek. Besides studios for painting, drawing, illustration, and graphic
design, the Old Chemistry Building contains a computer graphics laboratory,
a lecture auditorium for art history and
many faculty offices. Photography courses are
held in Kinard Hall.
SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS AVAILABLE The Art
Merit Scholarship is available to incoming freshman and transfer
students. Award decisions
are made based on a portfolio review during Spring Visit day. Other
competitive awards are also made available to currently enrolled
undergraduate full-time
art majors through the student art organizations and faculty review.
FINDING A JOB
A degree in art or art history offers many
different career opportunities. Though some study art as a rewarding
personal pursuit,
many seek employment in art in teaching, museums, galleries, studio work,
portraiture, ceramic and craft shops, printmaking studios, and foundries.
