Study Abroad

In addition to the traditional long-term programs available at the university (see Study Abroad page), the Department of Art offers a variety of short-term travel courses, each focused on a different metropolitan or regional destination. Typically, one or two of these courses are offered during each Intersession, Wintersession, and August-Abroad semesters. These courses are taught by departmental instructors for UM credit, and are opened to all UM students on a space-available basis. Courses are regularly offered in the following locations:

•Study the sketchbooks of artists Leonardo da Vinci, Pablo Picasso, Henry Moore and Dan Eldon
•Create a personal sketchbook in studio before departure to New York
•Visit the art galleries of Chelsea
•Explore the extensive inventory at a New York art supply store
•Study still life paintings at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenhiem Museum
•Discover real world “still life” in food venues such as Chelsea Market and Fulton Fish Market
•Spend the morning on a private tour of the Museum of Modern Art
•Use drawing, collages, watercolor and photography to document your New York experience
•Create and present artwork from imagery and ideas captured in your sketchbook

elephantTanzania: Digital Photography on Safari
June 9–18, 2010

This course is a two week intensive on-site studio course that focuses on travel photography in Tanzania. The specific emphasis will be wildlife and cultural photography. Students will learn the basics of digital photography, camera mechanics, and camera functions while creating a portfolio of images that focus on one main area of interest. Additionally, students will learn about the cultural and ecological history of the host country, which will contribute to the image-making process.
