How do I declare or change my major?
The first step in declaring or changing a major is to find out which School or College within the University "owns" that major and desired degree. Refer to section IIA "University of Mississippi Bachelor Degree Programs" in this Handbook or the Undergrad uate Catalog section entitled "Academic Structure and Degrees Offered." The School or College that owns my new major is:
Top of Page How do I find out who my advisor is? In some Schools, students who have declared a major will be assigned a faculty advisor from within their chosen department. In other Schools, professional advisors do all advising. The advisor you see during Freshmen Orientation is not necessarily your "official" advisor. You can login to Campus Management to find your advisor. Top of Page How do I pre-register? Prior to pre-registration (date noted in University calendar), you will need to make an appointment with your advisor. Your advisor will help you develop a schedule of courses for the next semester, as well as offer advice and answer any questions you ma y have regarding your degree. Once you have been advised, your advisor hold will be lifted allowing you to pre-register for those necessary classes. Undecided students are advised in the Academic Support Center. Individual advising sessions are set up during the weeks after the semester starts and end one week prior to pre-registration. For those students who choose not to come in during this time, group advising is offered beginning the week prior to pre-registration and continuing to the end of pre-registration. Top of Page What if I need to check or adjust my schedule? Once your advisor hold is lifted, you can access and make changes to your schedule using your Web ID and Password. Top of Page Can I drop a class? How? You can drop any course without permission until the the Course Withdrawal Deadline, that is posted on the Registar's Calendar.Keep in mind that falling below full time may have a disastrous effect on financial aid, housing, and insurance. No refunds will be issued after the 10th day of class. Withdrawing from courses beyond the official drop date must be approved by the Dean and are only done so in cases of extreme and unavoidable circumstances. Your transcripts will list the class from which you've withdrawn, followed by a W (if you are pass ing at the time of your withdrawal) or F (if you are failing at the time of withdrawal). It is always best to discuss your status with your instructor prior to withdrawal. Top of Page Can I still add a class? How? As stated in the University Calendar, the last day to Add a class without the Instructor's permission (provided it is open) is the 5th day of class. Between the 5th and 10th day, you'll need to bring your Add slip, signed by your Instructor, to that cour se's departmental office or dean's office. After the 10th day of class, courses may be added only under extraordinary circumstances in the dean's office, with the permission of the dean. Top of Page Can I retake a class that I've failed in order to increase my GPA? If you received a "D" or an "F" in any class at Ole Miss, you can retake that class, make a better grade, and use the Forgiveness Policy to supersede the first grade. This can only be used to replace grades on two courses and must be done after the Regis trar has recorded your semester grades which includes the class(es) you have retaken. There is no time limit on retaking the class or filing for the Forgiveness Policy (except that it must be done prior to graduation). Once invoked, it cannot be reverse d. If you choose to retake courses beyond the allowable limit, both your old and new grades will be averaged into your cumulative GPA. Some majors require a "C" minimum for core courses. In those cases, if you fail to make a C, you will be required to retake the course. Both your old and new grades will either be averaged or your old grade forgiven, as outlined above. Top of Page Which Undergraduate Catalog should I use for graduation requirements? It doesn't matter whether you transferred into Ole Miss or when you last changed your major. Generally speaking, you can choose any Ole Miss catalog that was in effect while you were a student at any accredited college or university, provided that it is no older than 6 years at the time of your graduation. (See Undergraduate Catalog: Degree Requirements: Curriculum Changes.) However, in the case of substantial changes to the curriculum, the University reserves the right to require currently enrolled st udents to follow a new curriculum. Check with your Department to stay abreast of curriculum changes. Top of Page |
