Student Transition and Retention Support
S.T.A.R.S. (Student Transition and Retention
Support) has been created to address the needs of the special population of
first-generation students.
S.T.A.R.S. will
provide programs and services targeted to the first-generation college student,
as well as help to facilitate preparation, recruitment, adjustment, retention
and graduation from college. Throughout the semester, S.T.A.R.S, will host
informative sessions integrating the wellness models. The program will be geared
toward assisting students in understanding choice living, actions that lead us
to that person we choose to become.
Sessions will provide information regarding:
developing friendships, the ability to interact comfortably with others, being
open to diverse multicultural beliefs and backgrounds, providing study skills
techniques and relaying information regarding university resources, having
periodic “Power Hour”—an opportunity for participants to share information about
topics of his/her choice, having a guest speaker from Financial Aid, utilizing
information on the web pertaining to money management and visiting the Career
Center to plan for a healthy future, such as career, family and future
wellness.
