How to Become a Sport Club
Determining an interest:
Whether you are new to a sport or have participated in one for years, Ole Miss Sport Clubs wants to develop your group on campus. Any competitive, recreational, or instructional student group in need of reserved facilities and additional funding for an activity is encouraged to discuss their interest with the Sport Clubs Council. For more information contact 915-5573 or stop by Turner Center 212.
Becoming a Student Organization:
Student clubs that wish to become an official Sport Club must first become a recognized Student Organization with the Office of Dean of Students. More information can be provided by contacting 915-7247, stop by Union 422, or check out the Student Organization web site - Student Organizations. Once your club has become an official Student Organization and is good standing with the University (typically a one year period) the Club can apply to be a Club Sport.
Clubs that have already achieved Student Organization status must still abide by the one year probationary period.
Becoming a Sport Club:
Student organization in good standing with the University may now set up a meeting with the Sport Clubs Council. Your Student Organization must give a presentation discussing: organization's history, why you desire to become a Department of Campus Recreation Sport Club, how the organization is in coordination with the DCR mission, etc.
After this presentation the Sport Clubs Council will decide on whether your organization will receive approval for Sport Club status.
Approval for Sport Club status:
If your Student Organization receives approval for Sport Club status your Club will be put on probationary status for one year with the Department of Campus Recreation. During this time period Clubs must remain in good standing with the University of Mississippi as well as the DCR by maintaining membership numbers, participating in fundraisers, developing connections with local, state and national organizations, taking part in competitions, etc.
At the end of your Club's probationary status you will be able to present to the Sport Club Council at the Budget Allocation Meeting in April. At this time your club will make a presentation on what you have accomplished during your probationary status and what the future holds for your club. A budget must be submitted that indicates how much you wish to receive from the DCR and why. This process will occur every April with your club presenting a budget proposal for the upcoming school year.
With official Sport Club status your club will be able to receive funding, as mentioned earlier. This funding can be used for hotel accommodations, national dues, equipment, uniforms and entry fees. Your club will also have priority on reserving DCR facilities.
All of this information and more is detailed out in the Sport Club Manual that can be picked up in Turner 212 or by calling 662-915-5573.
