Separated by more than 150 miles, the university’s
Oxford campus and UM Medical Center in Jackson have forged closer
ties than ever during the past decade. Chancellor Robert Khayat
maintains an office at the Medical Center, speaks regularly at
faculty meetings and leads commencement exercises there. The Medical
Center hosts the university’s annual reception for high
school honor students, and faculty from Oxford and Jackson collaborate
on interdisciplinary research projects ranging from pharmaceutical
sciences to remote sensing. Enrollment figures and research funding
for both campuses are reported jointly, and requests for federal,
state and private support come from a united effort, strengthening
the university’s overall missions of education, research
and service.
