Fundamental and Applied Surfactant Science

CURRENT AREAS OF INTEREST:

Engineered Interfaces: A method has been developed to modify inorganic surfaces at the molecular level by the in-situ formation of polymers utilizing a surfactant-templated polymerization system.   The admicellar polymerization method is quite flexible, making it possible to modify a large variety of substrates. We have shown that the multitude of different surfactants, monomers and initiation schemes available to the emulsion polymerization industry carry over quite well to this technology. Thus, the method can custom-modify the surface characteristics of a substrate, adapting it for the desired end use. We are currently examining many of the fundamental aspects of this process, seeking to understand the impact of system variables on the formed polymer film.

Pharmaceutical Applications of Adsolubilization and the Admicellar Polymerization Process: We are investigating various aspects of the process for the development of drug delivery systems.

Our other major area of reseach is atomic force microscopy.
