Course Objectives & Outcomes

Objective: To acquaint freshman undergraduates with the activities and careers pursued by chemical engineers and cultivate a foundation in engineering problem solving.

Desired Outcomes:

  1. Provide a basic description of career options available to chemical engineers and the industries where chemical engineers are commonly employed.
  2. Convert engineering units.
  3. Solve simple dimensional problems.
  4. Use a computer to perform calculations, create graphs, and perform linear regression of representative engineering data.

Introduction, Learning Styles, and Administration: 1 Class
First Group Project 2 Classes
Engineering Careers 1 Class
Engineering Units 1 Class
(Engineering) Unit Analysis 2 Class
Spreadsheet Programming (i.e. Excel) 4 Classes
Problem Solving Strategies 1 Class
Second Group Project 2 Classes
Written Report Evaluations 1 Class
Final Exam = Oral Presentations Final Exam Period

Overall Course Grading

20%- Homework (All assignments will count)
20%- Mid-Term Exam
15% First Group Project
25% Second Group Project
20%- Final Exam
