On the Personal Side:

I took a nontraditional pathway to academia. I spent 10 years in industry consulting on environmental site remediations before returning to academia via a PhD at the University of Colorado . My pathway covered 18 years of environmental/chemical engineering including project and program management in the fields of environmental engineering, microgravity, and advanced life support systems. A native of Scranton , PA , my interests include backpacking, outdoor activities, and travel, in addition to studies in philosophy. My picture on this page shows me standing in the door of a hotel constructed entirely out of salt. In my research laboratory I am still surrounded by (liquid) salts which we are using as separation agents.

Teaching:

My job is not to teach engineering but to teach how to think like an engineer.
