American Society of Civil Engineers

Student Chapter

The Ole Miss Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) was founded in 1923. The goal of the chapter is to prepare civil engineering students for their future involvement in the profession of civil engineering. The activities of the Chapter include social, professional, and community service programs. Social interactions include field trips, guest speakers, and cookouts which are used to promote camaraderie and fellowship among members. The Student Chapter also participates in the ASCE Southeast Regional competition against other regional ASCE Student Chapters. Events participated in at the regional competition include concrete canoe design, surveying, balsa wood bridge design, concrete cylinder testing, geotechnical event, technical paper presentation, visual presentations and T-shirt and banner design. All events allow the members of ASCE to employ classroom knowledge in practical applications, as well as to meet engineering students from other universities. The student chapter served the North Mississippi Branch of ASCE by co-hosting with the Mississippi State Student Chapter the 1993 Fall Meeting of the Mississippi Section of ASCE in Tupelo. Members of the student chapter also attend North Mississippi ASCE Branch meetings regularly. In the true sense of professionalism, the Student Chapter participates in community service projects in the Oxford area. The Chapter is involved in the Adopt-A-Highway program sponsored by the Mississippi Department of Transportation. Two and one-half miles of Highway 7 near Oxford is the adopted section which is cleared of litter twice yearly. A day-care center has also been adopted as part of the community service progam. Members of the Student Chapter repair playground equipment and add to existing playground structures in an effort to promote a safe and enjoyable environment for the children.
