Dear Ole Miss Civil Engineering Alumni and Friends,
Good news to report. The School of Engineering has received a gift of $100,000 to name a laboratory. The fund is designated to civil engineering use. The donor does not wish to publicize the event, so all I can tell you is that he is an Ole Miss Civil Engineering graduate.
The gift is timely, as one of the department's most valuable assets, the computer graphics laboratory, is up for renovation. The lab of 21 networked computers has been heavily used to teach AutoCAD, senior design, and other courses. The computers are now more than 4 years old and we can now plan for their replacement.
With the expansion of faculty research in concrete and other areas, the department has also requested laboratory space in the old Wal-Mart building. The vacated space in Carrier Hall will be dedicated to undergraduate labs. Although we haven't heard a decision yet, we anticipate that funds will be needed to fix up these laboratories.
We will use the gift wisely, and these are some of the critical areas that we can have great improvement.
On behalf of the students and faculty of the department, I express my deepest appreciation to the generous gift!
Alex
