Dear Ole Miss Civil Engineering Alumni and
Friend,
Sorry to hit you with another email in two days.
But I have a good news to report: Another Ole Miss civil engineering students
made to the national scene.
In one of my previous emails, I reported that our
recent graduate Lucy Phillips was selected as one of the "New Faces
in Engineering" by the National Engineers Week, giving the
department national exposure.
I am pleased to let you know that our graduating
senior, Kaumudi Atapattu, an international student from Sri Lanka, has been
awarded one of the five John A. Focht National Chi Epsilon
Scholarship.
As you know, Chi Epsilon is the national honor society for Civil
Engineering, consisting of over 120 chapters across the country, with each
institution nominating one student for scholarship awards. These students
are from MIT, Berkeley, Michigan, Illinois, ... Kaumudi first won the district
scholarship, and then moved to the national and won one of the five national
awards.
At the School of Engineering, Kaumudi is also this
year's David Arnold Engineering Award winner. Kaumudi with 3.95 GPA has
conducted undergraduate research with Dr. Garey Fox and published paper in
journal. She also serves in leadership capacity in many on-campus organizations.
Kaumudi plans to go to graduate school and to my understanding she has been
admitted to all schools she applied, including Stanford, Berkeley, Columbia, ...
I am contacted by a few schools to write recommendations for their most
prestigious scholarships.
Other civil engineering students also win honors.
Benjamin Njuguna won the ITE (Institute of Transportation Engineers) Deep South
District Scholarship.
Faculty advisor for Chi Epsilon is Dr. Garey Fox,
and for ITE is Dr. Waheed Uddin.
I am proud of the quality of our students. Please
join me to congratulate them.
Best wishes,
Alex
