S M Rao joined the civil engineering department
in July, 2003 as a post doctoral research associate. In 2006, he
was appointed Research Assistant Professor. His research adviser
is Prof. S.N. Prasad and his research work is primarily at the ARS/USDA
National Sedimentation Laboratory. He is studying the sedimentation
transport mechanisms in water-solid systems of open channel flow.
The experimental study includes the optical probe measurements on
grain velocity, solids concentration and the characterization of
sediment transport flow patters. Some of the features he is interested
are, the granular kinetics of saltating flow, development small
scale structures, their maturity and growth into larger scale structures.
Before coming to the University of Mississippi he was at the National
University of Singapore (1998-2002) as a Research Fellow and subsequently
with the Singapore-MIT Alliance as a SMA Research Fellow (2002-2003).
He has multidisciplinary research background in the mechanical,
chemical and bio-medical engineering fields. His prior research
study includes flow boiling heat transfer augmentation, drug delivery
to brain tumors and pneumatic conveying of solids.
