PEOPLE

Dr. Waheed Uddin, who came to Ole Miss in 1992, teaches courses and does research in the areas of transportation, infrastructure asset management, bridge management, pavement design and nondestructive evaluation, construction materials, and remote sensing applications in transportation engineering, with emphasis on computer applications. In December 1999, Dr. Uddin founded the Center for Advanced Infrastructure Technology (CAIT) at the University of Mississippi and since then he has been its Director. The Center has achieved national reputation in air quality monitoring and research using remote sensing tunable laser technology, as a university partner of the National Consortia on Remote Sensing in Transportation - Environmental Assessment (NCRST-E). Prior to joining the department, he worked as a United Nations pavement expert. During 1987-89, he played a leading role in the development of the deflection and material sampling and testing plans, operational manuals, and material property databases for the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) of the National Academy of Sciences. During 1999-2001, Dr. Uddin has been awarded over 2-million dollars external grants including the establishment of the department's advanced asphalt materials laboratory through external equipment grants from the Mississippi DOT and US DOT Federal Highway Administration. His recent projects include: airborne laser technology application in transportation and air quality for NASA and US DOT, Oxford Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) project, three dimensional-finite element modeling of pavement systems, simulation and mechanistic design of pavements for the Mississippi DOT, and the national 4-years university grant of the Federal Highway Administration on vehicle impacts and crashworthiness analysis of roadside safety structures. He serves on ASCE Committees on Highway Pavements and Airfield Pavements, ASCE Datapave International contest task group, and TRB committee on Aircraft/Airport Compatibility. He has been a reviewer of ASCE and TRB journal papers and a reviewer of NSF and NASA proposals. He was the chair of the successful Second International Pavement Symposium attended by participants from 32 countries at Auburn during July 29-August 1, 2001. He has published over 100 papers, discussions and reports. He has worked and lectured worldwide in 18 countries. He co-authored the textbook Infrastructure Management which was published by McGraw-Hill in 1997; its Japanese edition was published in June 2001. He is one of the co-founders of International Journal of Pavements (IJP) with the publication of its first issue in January 2002. He is the faculty advisor of the Ole Miss Civil Engineering Student Chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE). Dr. Uddin is the recipient of 2001 outstanding faculty service award of the Ole Miss School of Engineering.
