Attic black-figure winelifter or sprinkler. Ca. 500 B.C. Boy in olive tree, youth and man dancing. Gift of Mr. & Mrs. Frank Peddle. There are many small holes in the foot of this vessel and one hole in the hollow handle at the top making it possible to immerse the vessel in liquid, place one's thumb over the hole in the handle, then transfer liquid to another vessel, lift one's thumb and sprinkle the liquid into the new container. It may have been used to transfer wine from a krater or stamnos into a cup without transferring the dregs. |
