The Way, Jackson and Leavell Awards for the Study of the Classics
at the University of Mississippi have been established by Robert N. Leavell,
Alumni Association Professor of Law Emeritus at the University of Georgia
to honor three long-time Latin teachers in Oxford: Dr. Evelyn Way, former
Professor of Latin and Chair of the Department of Classics at the University
of Mississippi, Miss Harriet Jackson, and Mrs. Grace Farley Leavell, teachers
of Latin at University High School. The scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded
annually on the basis of academic excellence in high school or college
Classics courses to a Classics major at the University of Mississippi.
Students wishing to apply for the scholarship or teachers wishing to nominate
students for the scholarship should write to Department of Classics, University
of Mississippi, University, MS. 38677. The deadline for applications for
the 2003-2004 scholarship will be April 2, 2003. Applicants should send
a letter describing their background and interests in Classics and plans
for the future, a copy of their ACT or SAT scores, a transcript of their
grades in high school or college and one or more letters of recommendation
from teachers to the above address.
The first recipient of the Way, Jackson and Leavell Award for the
Study of the Classics for 1997-1998 is Ivy J. Huggins of Southaven,
Mississippi, a double-major in Classics and Biology and a member of the
Honors College. Ms Huggins plans a career in medicine.
Wendy Smith of Pontotoc, Mississippi received the award for
1998-99. Ms Smith is planning a career in Classics.
Classics majors Wendy Smith and Dennis Duncan received the award for
1999-2000.
Classics major Dennis Duncan received the award for
2000-2001.
Classics major Charles Roderic Wells II received the award for
2001-2002.
Classics major James M. Lohmar received the award for 2002-3 and 2003-4.
