The University Museums at the University of Mississippi consist of the
Mary Buie Museum built in 1939 and the adjoining Kate Skipwith Teaching Museum completed
in 1977. In 1998 a new wing providing space for the Fortune and Seymour Lawrence Galleries was opened. The Museums' collections represent the
fields
of archaeology, art, anthropology, decorative arts, history, science and
technology. Of special note are the David
M. Robinson Collection, (60
Vase Painters in the Robinson Collection), the Millington-Barnard
Collection of nineteenth-century scientific apparatus and the extensive
collection of Southern
Folk Art which features the works of Oxford artist Theora
Hamblett. Also of note are the Meyer-Fulton Collection of West African
art and the Lewisohn Collection of Caribbean folk art. The Museums regularly
bring traveling exhibitions and prepare frequent special exhibitions from
the permanent collections. The Museums, located at University Avenue and
Fifth Street, are open to the public free of charge, Tuesday-Saturday from
10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Some of the more than 2,000 objects which comprise the David M. Robinson Collection of Greek and Roman antiquities are illustrated in the photographs within.
