INTRODUCTION
This website has been designed to acquaint you with the educational
program of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University
of Mississippi, its academic and clinical requirements, its history and
facilities, policies and procedures. Although this reference will not
be able to answer all of your questions, it should provide you with an
outline of the major requirements you will need to meet both in your
academic and clinical training.
Students are preparing themselves to be speech-language pathologists, embarking
upon a new, stimulating, and growing profession, rendering service to
humanity and contributing to the quest for knowledge of the process of
human communication. Although the occupational settings may vary (hospitals,
private medical clinics, schools, preschool programs, research laboratories,
community service centers, colleges and universities, and the like),
the communicative disorders specialist must have a sound academic background
and well-developed clinical skills.
The graduate program of the Department of Communication
Sciences and Disorders at the University of Mississippi is accredited
by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing
Association (ASHA). All members of the faculty hold the Certificate of
Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology from ASHA
and are licensed by the State of Mississippi.
The department sponsors the Speech and Hearing Center,
a teaching clinic, to train speech-language pathologists to
provide services to individuals with communicative disorders in the north Mississippi area. The center is one of the forums in which graduate students
apply the theories and methods learned in academic courses.
