Welcome to the official website of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. CSD is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of communication disorders, which includes hearing, speech, language, developmental problems, and related disorders.

General Requirements

2009/2010 Undergraduate Catalog

A major in the Communicative Disorders for the B.A. degree requires 36 semester hours including Communication Sciences and Disorders 201, 205, 211, 216, 301, 316, 351, 356, 405, 495, and 6 additional hours as specified by the student’s adviser. The B.S. in communicative disorders is considered pre-professional training, as graduate study is necessary to qualify for certification by the American Speech-Language- Hearing Association in speech-language pathology or audiology.

Prescribed Studies

  • English (12 hours) 101-102 (6 hrs.) and any one course ranging from English 221-226 (3 hours) and English 250 (3 hours)
  • Language (12 hours) 101-102 and/or 201-202
  • Natural Science (9 hours) 2 semesters of Biology with labs (Biology must be in sequence). Three hours of Physical Science (Astronomy, Physics, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Geology, and Geological Engineering).
  • History (6 hours).
  • Fine or Performing Arts (3 hours) Art, music, dance, and theater arts - no studio or workshop courses
  • Humanities (3 hours) Afro-American Studies, Classical Civilization, Philosophy, Religion, Southern Studies or Gender Studies
  • Math (6 hours) 115, 120, 121, 123, 125, 261, 262, 267
  • Social or Behavioral Science (6 hours) Anthropology, Sociology, Economics, Political Science, Psychology, and Latin American Studies
