OUR MISSION
The essential roles of the Department of Communication
Sciences and Disorders are teaching, research, and service. The teaching
role is fulfilled through the department’s offering of three
degree programs: the Bachelor of Arts degree (in Communicative Disorders)
and the Master of Science degree (in Speech-Language Pathology). Research
augments the instructional programs by ensuring faculty and staff awareness
of and contribution to the currency of knowledge within the teaching
areas. Service to the community and University ensures that the students
will obtain the practical training and experience fundamental to the
practice of speech-language pathology and audiology.
In order to fulfill these two main training goals, the
program is built around two equally necessary component parts, the academic
program and the clinical program. National accreditation from the American
Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) is held for the Master’s
degree academic program and for the department’s clinical program.
Re-accreditation is requested for the speech-language pathology program.
The University of Mississippi’s graduate audiology program is suspended.
The Mission of the department is consistent with the missions
of the University of Mississippi and the School of Applied Sciences.
The department fulfills a commitment to public service for the University,
meets the University’s Office of Research challenges, and holds
to the standards of excellence in teaching set forth by the School of
Applied Sciences. The three units are all committed to enhancing the
academic experience for students through ongoing self-study, outcomes
assessment, and concern for and attention to cultural diversity in the
curricula.
