- EDCI 352 - Human Development and Diversity
A 15-hour field based/classroom experience is required for this course. This field
experience includes classroom interaction, observation, tutoring, and reflection.
Each teacher education candidate is required to maintain a reflective journal. The
requirements for this journal will be explained in the EDCI 352 class. The reflective
journal promotes analysis and reflection on classroom issues that may be observed.
University instructors will provide specific information regarding the field experience
requirements for this course. Placement for field experience will be determined
by the university instructors and school principals.

- EDCI 353 - Introduction to Effective Classroom Practices and Strategies
A 30-hour field based classroom experience in a Professional Development School
is required for this course. This field experience includes completion of a reflective
journal/TWS (Teacher Work Sample), a three-day written lesson plan, and a videotaped
lesson. The requirements for each of these assignments will be explained in class.
Placement for field experience will be determined by the university instructors
and PDS principals.

Elementary Education
Elementary education majors also have required field experiences in two reading
courses prior to their senior year. EDRD 355 is offered during the spring semester
of the sophomore year, and EDRD 400 is offered during the spring semester of the
junior year.

Special Education
Special education majors have additional field experience hours in two courses prior
to their senior year. Both courses are taken during the spring semester of the junior
year.

SENIOR YEAR FIELD EXPERIENCES-FALL SEMESTER
Elementary Education Program
During the fall semester of an elementary education teacher candidate's senior year,
the candidates will participate in Action Lab (EDLE 417) field experiences two days
each week and attend University classes three days each week (EDEL 401, EDEL 402,
EDEL 403, EDEL 404, and EDRD 414).

EDLE 417 - Action Lab in the Elementary School - Senior Year
Candidates will be placed in Professional Development Schools (PDS) during this
semester. PDS sites include DeSoto County School District, Grenada School District,
Lafayette School District, New Albany School District, Oxford School District, Pontotoc
City School District, Pontotoc County School District, Senatobia School District,
South Panola School District (Batesville), Tate County School District, Water Valley
School District, Coffeeville School District, and Tupelo School District. Other
sites may be approved as needed. The sites are selected based on the concept that
teachers are facilitators of learning and value themselves as reflective, interactive
problem solvers, effective communicators, users of technology, advocates for diverse
learners, and lifelong learners.

Secondary Education Program
During the fall semester of a secondary teacher education candidate's senior year,
the candidate will participate in field experiences (EDSE 400) that are in conjunction
with assigned Special Methods (442, 445, 446, 447) courses related to a candidate's
content area of study. The candidate will be placed in Lafayette County and surrounding
school districts for senior field-based experiences.

- Whole class instruction (minimum of two times)
Secondary education candidates are assigned to a school from their preference list
for the 40 hours of observation/practicum. A specific date for beginning and ending
field experiences will be announced at the beginning of the semester. A typical
time frame for field experience is the middle of September until the week before
Thanksgiving holidays.
Secondary education candidates will meet with their school site supervisor to determine
a schedule. Observation/field experience hours are done during regular class instruction
time. Before or after school duty, lunch, and/or planning periods are not acceptable
observation hours. Completing the 40-hour field experience is a requirement for
passing EDSE 400.
Special Education Program
During the fall semester of the senior year, the candidates will participate in
a variety of field experiences through EDSP 402, 403, and 405. Candidates will be
placed in Professional Development Schools (PDS) during all senior field-based experiences.
In addition to the PDS sites listed above, the special education program also uses
the North Mississippi Regional Center (NMRC), which is also a PDS site.

SENIOR YEAR FIELD EXPERIENCES-SPRING SEMESTER
During the spring semester of the senior year, candidates will complete student teaching requirements. Teacher education candidates participating in the Teacher Assistants' Program may be placed in their requested school if all requirements are met and approved by the Director of Field Experiences. To insure a diversity of teaching experiences, placement will be assigned by the Field Placement Office (see student teaching handbook for more detail).
Elementary education majors will be placed in PDS sites. Their preferred instructional grade level will be considered when being placed in student teaching (EDLE 464), but they must have experience in lower elementary (grades K-3) and upper elementary (grades 4-6).
Secondary education majors will be placed in NMEC schools. Their preferred instructional grade level and subject concentration will be considered when being placed for student teaching (EDLE 482, 483, 485, 486,487), but they must have experience in junior high (grades 7-8) and high schools (9-12).
Special education majors will be placed in PDS sites. Candidates complete field experiences in a variety of school settings at both elementary and secondary levels. Placements provide experiences with students exhibiting mild to moderate or severe disabilities. Two placements are required during student teaching (EDLE 467)-one in elementary and one in high school.
