The University of Mississippi professional education faculty regularly and systematically collaborate with colleagues in K-12 settings, faculty in arts and sciences, and colleagues in the broader professional community with the goals of improving teaching, candidate learning, and professional education. For example, faculty from the College of Liberal Arts serve with unit faculty and school partners on the Teacher Education Committee that reviews and approves all curricular changes and recommends policy for the educator preparation programs. The following offices and other activities are in place to promote and support collaboration including:
  • Center for Educational Research and Evaluation (CERE) was established in 1999 as a resource for UM and for external agencies, such as state departments and local school districts. CERE has provided grant writing support, analysis of student outcomes, curriculum audits, evaluation design and analyses, etc. to public and private agencies including: Barksdale Reading Institute, Mississippi Department of Education, University of Hawaii, National Science Foundation. (Exhibit 5.5.4)

  • Faculty in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, the College of Liberal Arts, and K-12 school partners received No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Improving Teacher Quality Grants (Mathematics/Science) the past three years to assist middle and high school classroom teachers with skills in reading, mathematics, and science. Approximately forty-five teachers have participated in projects during the past two academic years.

  • Faculty also collaborate with candidates, especially in advanced programs, which provides an additional learning opportunity for candidates. For example, in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, several candidates in advanced programs have published in the area of mathematics and science. The Counselor Education faculty have published with several candidates, and candidates have made regional and national presentations. Two faculty members and K-12 teachers who participated in the Summer Institute for Reading presented at the Mississippi State Department of Education Summer Conference 2006.
