Information for Current Students, or prospective Undergraduate, Transfer, or Graduate students.

A student wishing to enroll in the School of Engineering must first be admitted to University as either an undergraduate or graduate student.

The programs of study offered by the School of Engineering stress the engineering sciences and are based on the fundamental concepts of natural science and mathematics. As such a student wishing to enter the School of Engineering as an undergraduate must meet a set of minimum requirements.

The minimum requirements for a student wishing to enter into graduate studies in the School of Engineering vary among the departments, but generally include a strong academic background in the engineering sciences or related fields.

Admission of Freshmen

An applicant to the freshman class in the School of Engineering must submit the following:

  1. The applicant's academic record from an approved secondary school which includes at least the following units:

2 Must be selected from biology, chemistry, and physics.
  2. A standard composite score on the American College Test (ACT)of at least 20.

Deficiency in Requirements

Freshman applicants deficient in the above secondary school requirements may be admitted with the provision that these deficiencies be removed during the first year of enrollment. It should be noted that such deficiency may necessitate additional time required for a candidate to obtain a degree in engineering. The application file of students with ACT scores below 20 will be automatically forwarded to the Office of the Dean of the School of Engineering by the University Admissions staff for consideration and possible waiver of the minimum score. If admission to the School of Engineering based on available information is disapproved following review, the Admissions staff will notify the applicant of such and inform him/her that a formal petition seeking waiver of minimum admission requirements may be directed to the Dean of the School of Engineering. Such a petition, to be reviewed by an Engineering Admissions Committee, should be based on an excellent academic record in high school or other evidence of the promise of success, especially in the areas of mathematics and the physical sciences.

Admission of Transfer Students

An overall C average in course work taken at other approved colleges is required for transfer into the School of Engineering. In unusual cases the rule may be waived with the approval of the appropriate department chair and the Dean.

Evaluation of Transfer Credits

Credits of students transferring from approved colleges will be accepted at their original values for credit toward a degree in engineering, subject to the condition that the last grade received in each subject is C or better. The Office of Admissions and Records will provide each transfer student with an evaluation of the credits acceptable to the University. The Dean of the School of Engineering will inform the student the extent to which such credits will apply toward the degree sought. Acceptance of junior college work is limited to one half the total requirements for graduation in a given four-year curriculum.

Admission of International Students

International undergraduate applicants must have received a high school diploma with a B average or better and have completed a minimum of 12 years of primary and secondary education. Those prospective students whose native language is other than English must submit evidence of ability in English by a minimum TOEFL score of 550. Those students transferring from other colleges and universities must have an overall B average or better on all courses taken.
