Welcome Parents!

Life After High School

A significant number of students today feel they are overwhelmed with the prospect of planning their life after high school. This can be a daunting time for them, as they feel they are not really in control of their own destiny.

Students will have many questions...

I want to go to a university! Why?

Engineering sounds interesting! I can handle mathematics! What do engineers do?

How do I financially plan for my university education? How much will it cost?

How far away do I want to be from my parents? How far is far enough?

And, many other questions that will have great impact upon a student's success for the future...

Have heart parents, we can answer these questions, and there is life after high school for your son or daughter!

Engineering will be their "Gateway" to an exceptional future.

Ole Miss engineering concentrates on four central themes:

  • ACADEMIC PLANNING

Am I ready for the engineering curriculum?

  • FINANCIAL PLANNING

How do I identify and obtain financial resources (scholarships, athletics, loans, student employment, CO-OP, summer internships, etc.)

  • CAREER PLANNING

What do engineers do? For example, what is the difference between civil engineering and mechanical engineering?

Why do students participate in our engineering specialized areas (tracks) that include medical school, law school, teaching, R.O.T.C., etc.?

We will assist each student to focus better on their personal goals in support of their engineering degree program

  • CHARACTER BUILDING

Besides being technically competent, today's employer looks for character, integrity, and social skills that will complement a graduate's professional engineering development.

Although they do overlap, how one plans for each of them is not the same. Academic planning is not the same as career planning.

The Rules of the Game!

  • We live in a world of rules... football games, dating, driving your vehicle, taxes, etc., and the same four critical themes mentioned above also have rules.
  • Students must be able to learn the rules to play!
  • We must concentrate on the student's ability to develop and refine these skills if the student is to make good decisions now and for the future.

Lifetime Experience

We also focus on engineering as a lifetime experience, and not just a four year degree program. A student will normally have three primary goals:

  • Goal #1 - I want a degree program that will provide the greatest of employment opportunities.

Employment translates into 40 or 50 years of continuous work, with lateral and vertical mobility for success!

  • Goal #2 - I want a plan for financial security.

A student must temper his career interest with a dose of financial reality. I need to be able to have an income that is progressive, and sustained.

  • Goal #3 - I want to attain a great self-worth.

Simply put: if you want to be "great", then you attempt "great" things.

At times, engineering can be difficult, or it can be easy, depending on a student's preparation. The curriculum will be challenging, but the goal is worth the effort!

Ole Miss Engineering Visitation

  • Ole Miss Engineering has an "open door" visitation policy.
  • This is the time where a student will be able to better focus on their goal(s), and they will have a direct "hands-on" approach into the initial planning of their future.
  • Once students have a better view of their engineering career and begin to develop their individual plan, they will be better students academically and feel in control of their future.
