HOW TO PURCHASE RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS

Summary:

  • Radioactive Materials can only be ordered by and shipped to the Health & Safety Department.
  • Before Radioactive Materials can be purchased for a Principle Investigator (PI), each PI must obtain an Authorization to use Radioactive Materials by completing Radiological Safety Training-Materials  and submitting the application for Authorization to Use Radioactive Materials to the Health & Safety Department.
  • The PI must then submit an Application for Radioisotope use in a Location.
  • The Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) will review the applications with the principal investigator and grant preliminary approval or indicate that the application will require approval by the Radiation Safety Sub-Committee before the project can begin.
  • Once the PI has received authorization to use Radioactive Materials and the Laboratory has been approved for use of Radioactive Materials, the PI may submit an application to purchase the Radioactive Material.

Submit a Radioactive Material Purchase Application

1.  Complete A Radioactive Material Purchase Application

  • A Radioactive Material Purchase Application form may be obtained from the Health & Safety Department webpage.
  • The Principle Investigator should complete all of the information requested within the outlines of the form. The form should be dated and signed by the Principle Investigator and the Cost Center Number (account number) should be entered and signed by the Signatory Officer.  The form should then be returned to the Health & Safety Department for review and approval.

2.  Wait for Approval

  • The RSO, after review of the application, will notify the applicant of preliminary approval.  In cases involving unusual or hazardous use of radioactive materials, the applicant is notified of final approval after review of the application by the Radiation Safety Sub-Committee (RSSC).

3.  Purchase and Receipt of Radioactive Material

  • When the application is approved, the material will be ordered.  Most Radioactive Material is received within two working days of the order.

4.  Delivery of Radioactive Material

  • When the Radioactive Material is received by the Health & Safety Department, the order will be checked for leakage and the material will be added to the University Inventory.
  • Health and Safety will call to inform you that you may pick up the material and the associated paperwork at the Health & Safety Department Main Office.
