Hazardous Waste Annual Retraining

Federal, State and University regulations require appropriate training, and annual retraining, of all persons involved with the identification, production, collection, handling or disposal of Hazardous Chemicals.

  • Since you have reached this page, you are either directly or indirectly responsible for the proper handling of Hazardous Waste Chemicals from a specific area of the campus.
  • This retraining page is for the typical University employee who oversees an area where hazardous materials are used, and disposal of these materials is ultimately required.

Do I need Retraining?

  • I do not work with hazardous chemicals.
  • No, you do not need this retraining.

  • I am an UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT, or
  • I am a GRADUATE STUDENT, or
  • I am a GRADUATE INSTRUCTOR, or
  • I am a TEACHING ASSISTANT, and
  • I work with hazardous materials.
  • Persons in the above category are neither State Employees, University Employees nor employees of a distinct organization that leases space from the University. As a student or teaching assistant, you are highly supervised in your work, and you are learning how to work with hazardous materials. You are not authorized to determine when materials that belong to the University are no longer needed. You may work with hazardous materials, you may collect and pour materials into containers and you may have other students do the same for you, but you are not able to declare a material excess, out of specification or waste. Your teachers and Instructors will tell you what to do.
  • No, you do not need this retraining.

  • I am a RESEARCHER, or
  • I am a FULL TIME STAFF MEMBER, or
  • I am an ADMINISTRATOR, or
  • I am a DEPARTMENT HEAD, or
  • I am a SUPERVISOR, or
  • I am an INSTRUCTOR

and . . .

  • I work with Hazardous Chemicals or supervise students who work with Hazardous Chemicals, and,
  • I determine when the chemicals in my area of responsibility are either no longer needed or waste, or,
  • I have been instructed by someone in my department to sign disposal request forms in their absence.

Yes, you are required to take this annual refresher course.

  • My company or agency is not part of the University.
  • We work on the campus, but we are just renting space.
  • Once in a while, I need to discard some Hazardous Chemicals.

Yes, you are required to take this annual refresher course.
