Summary of Previous Years:
Federal and State Inspection
The University Hazardous Waste Program is subject to unannounced inspections from the Environmental Protection Agency and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality. You or other people you know may have been questioned by these representatives while they were on campus. During their latest visit, they inspected virtually every lab, shop and storage area where hazardous materials are used or stored.
During the course of the inspection, the only problems uncovered were a couple of waste solvent containers with improper labels and a couple of carboys that had funnels sticking out of the opening instead of properly closed caps.
Compliance Inspection Report Page
In response to the inspection, we began a program of pre-labeling the mixed solvent carboys every time we return or drop off an empty container. We have also marked the handles of the containers to alert personnel to keep the container closed - except when waste is added or removed from the carboy.
Federal, State and University regulations require appropriate training, and annual retraining, of all persons involved with the identification, production, collection, handling or disposal of Hazardous Chemicals. Since you have reached this page, you are either directly or indirectly responsible for the proper handling of Hazardous Waste Chemicals from a specific area of the campus. This retraining page is for the typical University employee who oversees an area where hazardous materials are used, and disposal of these materials is ultimately required.
