May 2011: HESRM Graduate Students Win Honors

The Department of Health, Exercise Science and Recreation Management is pleased to announce that two students received honors in the recent University of Mississippi Graduate School Poster Symposium and Research Day. Kevser Ermin won first place with her project "Differences in bone mineral density between adolescent female tennis players and non-tennis players". Abby Gamble won 3rd prize for her submission entitled "Ecological predictors of children's in-school physical activity and weight status in the Mississippi Delta." Read full announcement...

Research Publication: Dr. Mark Loftin, Dr. Dwight Waddell, Mr. James Robinson, and Dr. Scott Owens recently published "Comparison of Energy Expenditure to Walk or Run a Mile in Adult Normal Weight and Overweight Men and Women" in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research.

HESRM Faculty Serve as Leaders in Professional Journals

Dr. Mark Loftin serves as an Associate Editor for Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport. Dr. Jeffrey Hallam serves as the Associate Editor for the Washington State Public Health Journal and is also a member of the editorial board of the American Journal of Health Promotion and the American Journal of Health Behavior. Dr. Jim Gilbert is the Editor of the E-Journal of the Mississippi Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

Prestigious fellowship funds doctoral student�s research in Delta

Abigail Gamble, believed to be the first doctoral student at UM to receive a prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Foundation dissertation fellowship, is using the award to study the physical activity of schoolchildren in the Delta. Read more...
