Family and Consumer Sciences OverviewThe Department of Family and Consumer Sciences is one of the fastest growing departments at the University of Mississippi. More than 400 undergraduate students have chosen to major in the degree programs within the family and consumer sciences as of spring 2007. Much of the increase in declared majors can be attributed to the dedicated, student-oriented faculty as well as academic programs designed to prepare professionals with a competitive edgein the exciting fields of Nutrition and Dietetics, Hospitality Management, and Food and Nutrition Services. Selected research topics addressed in the department include child nutrition, weight control, sport nutrition, nutrition epidemiology, food environment, food assistance programs, health and welfare, service management, hospitality finance, hospitality marketing, and food tourism. Department MissionOur mission is to provide excellence in research and educational programs in the field of Family and Consumer Sciences as a multidisciplinary academic unit. Through its teaching and service activities, the department prepares individuals to engage in professional and ethical endeavors in Family and Consumer Sciences that enhance the quality of life for individuals, families, organizations, and communities. What We DoThe Department publishes semi-annual newsletter series to report the research and scholarship accomplishments by faculty members and students.
