Abstract
Ray Lum owned a horse and mule trading business in Vicksburg, Miss. throughout most of the twentieth century. His wife, Ellie Lum, ran a real estate business in Vicksburg and founded Sky Farms, the city’s first subdivision. The Lums also owned an antique store and a funeral home. The collection chiefly contains the couple’s business records.

Biographical Note

Ray Lum owned a horse and mule trading business in Vicksburg, Miss. throughout most of the twentieth century. Born in Rocky Springs, Miss. in 1891, Lum began his trading career at the age of 14. In 1920, he established a central sale barn in Fort Worth, Tex. in 1922. Lum continued in the trading business until his death in 1976. Ray Lum was also a storyteller.

Ellie Lum ran a real estate business in Vicksburg and founded Sky Farms, the city’s first subdivision.

The Lums also owned an antique store and a funeral home.

Scope and Content

The collection chiefly contains the couple’s business records (i.e. invoices, bank statements, canceled checks, payroll and expense records). The collection, which consists of twelve boxes, is divided into Ray Lum’s records (Boxes 1-5) and Ellie Lum’s records (Box 6-12). There is very little personal material in the collection, roughly one folder per individual.
