Historical Note
Sally Kate Winters, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. C. Preston Winters of West Point, Mississippi, died tragically in a car accident on April 11, 1965, just two months shy of graduation. She was a liberal arts major with an interest in education. At the time of her death, she was practice teaching at Whitehaven High School in Memphis, Tennessee. Winters was a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, the freshman honor society; CWENS, a National Honorary Organization for Sophomore women; Mortar Board, the highest possible co-ed leadership honor; and Phi Kappa Phi, the highest scholastic honor given to an Ole Miss student. A sister of the Kappa Delta sorority, she was also a varsity cheerleader, a sponsor for the Army ROTC and a member of the Wesley Foundation.
Following her death, Mr. and Mrs. C. Preston Winters established the Sally Kate Winters Memorial Scholarship Fund, which provided three scholarships of five hundred dollars for the 1965-1966 session. The scholarships aimed to assist unmarried young women pursuing a curriculum in liberal arts and education who demonstrated outstanding academic scholarship, leadership, and need. Additional priority was given to students from Clay County, Mississippi.
The materials in this collection consist of the letters, telegrams, and cards received by the Winters family, expressing condolences and remembrances of Sally Kate Winters. The collection also contains letters of appreciation concerning the establishment of the scholarship fund, notices of donations to the fund and other charities, as well as letters from students who received the scholarships.
